Beginners Training

Hastings & St Leonards runs annually two sail training courses and aims not only to introduce people to the sport of sailing but also for them to benefit from being part of a warm and friendly Club run by sailing enthusiast volunteers.

Adult Beginners RYA Level 1 & RYA Level 2 – These courses introduce you to sailing and get you afloat firstly under supervision (Level 1) and then builds on these foundations to develop your independent sailing skills (Level 2). The courses are Royal Yachting Association (RYA) approved and are led by our experienced, friendly and qualified instructors.

Sailing in small dinghies and moving them around the beach is a physical activity. You need to be able to swim 50 meters, and climb into a dinghy from the water, which is roughly equivalent to pulling yourself out of a swimming pool without using a pool ladder or steps. Oh, and you mustn’t mind getting wet! It is important that you attend every session if you want to reach the standards for the RYA qualifications and get maximum benefit from being part of a group of keen beginners who often become sailing allies and good friends.

The cost covers your tuition fees, a sailing manual and log book, use of a club buoyancy aid, club boats during the course and for those attaining RYA Level 2 free use of club boats for the remainder of the year and all of the next season. You will need to have your own wetsuit. Gloves, sailing boots or old  trainers, and a kagool or sailing spray top are also recommended.

The fee also includes your club membership fee for the season, which runs to mid December – we are a hardy bunch!

Our courses are now full for 2018. Please check the website in October for information regarding 2019 course dates, times and prices.
