Beginners Training

Hastings and St Leonards sailing club is a great place to learn to sail if you are a complete beginner, have dingy sailing experience or you are a club member wanting to improve your skills. All courses offered are Royal Yachting Club (RYA) approved, and our instructors are experienced and friendly.

Hastings and St Leonards SC offers training to anyone 18 years old or over with no upper age limit. Our training runs along the guidelines of the Royal Yachting Association approved structure and we combine the RYA Level 1 Start Sailing course with the RYA Level 2 Basic Skills course.

Adult courses
Our course covers RYA Level 1, which introduces you to sailing with all you need to know to get afloat under supervision, and takes you through RYA Level 2 setting out the foundations of sailing for you. On successful completion of all criteria as set out in the RYA syllabus, the sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques, background knowledge and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. The course covers rigging, rope work, launch and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres including tacking, gybing and sailing to windward, recovering a capsized dinghy which is conducted in a controlled manner with a safety boat in attendance, sailing theory, background knowledge and basic meteorology.
