16 boats took part in the Battle of Hastings Handicap. There were six Lasers, two Laser Radials, three Dart 16’s, two Miracles, one Merlin Rocket, one RS 400 and a 505.
They raced in very light force 2 winds coming mainly from the East.
There were 3 races, with the best two to count.
Race 1 started with most of the boats taking the in shore route to avoid the strong current, as the wind was coming from the same direction. John Parmenter crewed by Richard Parmenter was first round the windward mark in the 505 which John had restored during last winter. closely followed by Roy Sandford and Steve Clark in their Lasers, Don Terry and crew Simon Terry were next round in their Merlin Rocket. The positions stayed mostly the same until the end of the 2 lap race. Although The Parmenters finished first past the winning line, they finished second on handicap, Sandford was the winner and Clark was 3rd. The Terry’s finished 4th.
Race 2 was delayed as the wind had dropped off, but finally got off after lunch. The Parmenters started well as did Melanie Clark crewed by Frazer Clark in an RS 400 (Did not start in the 1st race as they had technical difficulties). They were closely followed by Clark and Sandford. They managed to get several minutes ahead of the rest of the fleet that were finished after one lap. By the time the leaders came to the end of the second lap the Parmenters were several minutes clear of the Clarks with Steve Clark in 3rd and Sandford in 4th. On handicap Clark won in his Laser, Sandfor was 2nd, the Parmenters were 3rd and the Clarks were 4th.
Race 3 was a shorter race of one lap. Positions were close round the first mark, the Clarks on the RS 400 got ahead and finished 1st from Mike Pollard crewed by Dan Jackson on their Dart 16 with Sandford 3rd just keeping Clark at bay by half a minute. The revised positions on handicap were Sandford 1st, Clark 2nd, The Clarks 3rd and Jim Corrigan 4th in a Laser. The Parmenters did not race in the last race.
The Overall Battle of Hastings Handicap Result was : -
1st Roy Sandford
2nd Steve Clark
3rd John and Richard Parmenter
4th Melanie and Frazer Clark
