Sunday 11th May, Races 1, 2 & 3 in the Early Summer Series.
A lovely sunny day with light winds of force 2 to 3 coming from the east greeted the eleven Lasers, three Laser Radials, three Dart 16’s, one Shearwater, two Merlin Rockets, two Miracles and a 49’er.
The Darts got under way in race 1 of the Early Summer Series with Matt Wiseman crewed by Tom Alexander leading the way from Richard Bourne on his own with Mike Pollard and novice Lizzie crewing in 3rd. By the time they got on to the 2nd lap in the light winds, Bourne had taken the lead, he maintained this to the end, with Wiseman and Alexander 2nd, Pollard and Lizzie were 3rd.
Race 2 saw even lighter winds Greg Wilcox and Alex Wilcox in their Shearwater joined in with the Dart 16’s to race and finished the race1st, but on handicap they were 2nd, with Wiseman and Alexander in 1st place, Bourne was 3rd.
After lunch race 3 started in a much improved wind of force 4.The Wilcox’s again found the finish line first, but were again 2nd on Handicap, this time with Pollard and Lizzie in 1st place, Wiseman and Alexander were 3rd.
In the first race of the Lasers Don Bowles, Chris Hills and Claude Sgro got off to a good start, while the rest of the fleet were struggling to past the first mark. They finished in that order with the rest some way behind.
Race 2 started with Bowles, Steve Clark and Sgro leading in light winds and by the time they reached the leeward mark on the second circuit the wind all but disappeared for a few minutes causing a pile up, this in turn helped other boats behind to catch up. Clark, who had remained at the front, hit the beach first but did not cross the finishing line. 1st Past the post was Sgro with Derek Treacher 2nd and Rex Patching in 3rd. But revised places after handicap were Patching in 1st (Laser Radial) 2nd Karen Hilder (Laser Radial) and 3rd Sgro (Laser).
In race 3 only eight raced in the stronger winds, Mick Lane started in the lead with Bowles and Steve Phillips chasing, by the second lap Bowles had taken the lead and Lane capsized going down wind. Bowles finished 1st with Clark finishing a fast 2nd with Phillips in 3rd.
The Merlin Rockets had two races. In the first John Parmenter and crew John Stevens beat Don Terry and crew Chris Adam by two and a half minutes. But in the second Terry and Adam got their revenge winning by six and a half minutes.
The two Miracle’s raced; Phil Cosham beat Roy Richards and crew Dudley Harris in the first. But neither managed to finish in the light winds of the second race. Cosham had a walk over in the third.
Max Richardson crewed by Kevin Richardson (Commodore) were out practicing in a 49’er the type of boat in which Max hopes to be racing in the 2012 Olympics.
