29er WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Qualifying Races

 

Max Richardson, member of Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club is doing well in the 29er World Championships at Sorrento Yacht Club, Melbourne, Australia.

He and his crew Alex Groves (Island Barn SC Surrey) finished in 3rd place out of 101 competitors after the 10 of the 12 qualifying races, the last 2 were cancelled due to big winds coming in from the Ocean. Only Steven Thomas & Jasper Warren (Australia) and Hanrik Sogaard & Soren Kristensen (Denmark) were ahead. Out of the 10 races they finished 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 12th on the first day. In light winds on the second day they finished 1st in all four races. The third day they were 4th and 2nd.

They now go into the Gold fleet (25 boats) for the final 12 races of the World Championships which finish on Wednesday 9th January.

 

Gold Fleet Races

 

 

Max Richardson & Alex Groves of Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club and Island Barn SC today claimed Youth Gold Medals, and Bronze overall, in a nail biting finish to the 29er World Championships in Sorrento. Australians Thomas and Warren clinched overall Gold with 2 1st places in the final 2 races of what has been a challenging and exciting finals.

The first day in Gold class of 25 boats saw Richardson and Groves finishing 9th, 21st, 15th and 5th in the four races.

The next day they finished 7th, 2nd, 3rd and 10th.

The final day started with a very light 6 knot breeze and they could only finish 16th in the first race. After this the fleet were sent ashore as the wind dropped further, and the second race was cancelled. When the sea breeze kicked in, the fleet were again launched in a good 15-20 knot easterly breeze. In the final two races they finished in 6th and 7th places. This gave them the overall 3rd place and a Bronze Medal. The Gold Medal was won by the Australians, Steven Thomas & Warren Jasper, with another pair of Australians, Byron White & William Ryan securing the Silver Medal.

Another British pair, Bloddyn Mon & Tom Humphreys finished in forth position.
