Three Dart 16’s, 7 Lasers, 3 Miracles, 1 Shearwater, 1 Taser and a 505 took part in the first races in the Autumn Series.
The conditions at the start of racing was a 5 mph breeze from the SSW, twenty minutes later the wind was up at 15mph from the west, after another ten minutes it was 20 mph from the south west.
The Darts went off as usual first very slowly but gradually speeded up as the wind increased. Barry Duck crewed by Charlotte Auld went off in the lead from Rob Hamilton crewed by Isabel Hartnell with Tom Nash crewed by Maurice Nash in 3rd. They kept this order for the 3 lap race.
Race 2 was cancelled as the wind and waves were causing capsizes amongst other boats that were on the water.
After lunch race 3 took place in 18 mph winds. Duck now had Brent Auld as crew and Hamilton had Scott Hartnell as crew. Hamilton and Hartnell finished the first lap in the lead from Duck and Auld with the Nash’s in 3rd, but Hamilton and Hartnell missed one of the marks and were disqualified. The order stayed the same for the next three laps.
The Lasers started race 1 with Mick Lane taking the lead on a inshore route close to the shore from Steve Clark and Don Bowles taking the deeper route further out at sea. Lane stayed in the lead until the wind came up at the start of the 2nd lap. When Clark and Bowles overtook. Colin Ross went into 3rd place at the end of the 2nd lap but when the wind increased further several of the Lasers retired and at the finish of the 3 lap race Clark was still in the lead from Bowles with Lane in 3rd.
Race 3 started with only two competitors Clark started in the lead and was increasing his lead when his mast broke by the first mark. Lane only had to finish the race to win. Although there was talk of sabotage Lane kept the race.
The Miracles started with Phil Cosham taking the lead from Dave Gordon and Roy Richards and Dudley Harris. When the wind came up on lap 2 Gordon Retired, Cosham went on to win from Richards and Harris. They did not race in the afternoon.
The 505, John Parmenter crewed by Richard Parmenter and the Taser, William Hodgson crewed by Lizzy Faulkner were racing against each other, but after 2 laps of close racing they both retired due to the heavy seas.
The Shearwater Alex Wilcox crewed by Greg Wilcox sailed with the Dart 16’s but won the Maverick Fleet race 1 and 3.
