Only six boats contested the RNLI Handicap on Bank Holiday Monday, most of the missing sailors were still feeling the aches and pains from the Sunday races.

Just before race 1 it was sunny and the wind was a pleasant force 3 from the south west, soon after the start the wind began to get stronger. John Parmenter crewed by Melanie Clark in a Merlin Rocket took the lead, following them was Martin Watson (Laser Radial), Mick Lane (Laser Radial), Karen Hilder (Laser Radial), Helen Edwards (Topper), Brian Cholerton (Laser) and Michael Mulkurren (Laser Radial). Lane soon lost a place when capsizing soon after the windward mark. There were several others capsizing during the three lap race, notably the Merlin whilst still in the lead. Parmenter and Clark struggled to bail out the water from the Merlin and did not finish the race. Watson was the only one to keep his balance in the rough conditions and went on to win from Hilder and Lane.

At the start of the 2nd race, several competitors decided they had had enough of the tiring conditions. Only the Merlin and one Laser Radial raced on the three jibe course. Parmenter and Clark went straight into the lead and stayed there winning the race easily from the ever capsizing Lane. But he managed to finish and to win the event by default, even without the aid of the RNLI.

1st Mick Lane (Laser Radial)                                                     5 Points.

2nd John Parmenter crewed by Melanie Clark (Merlin)             9 Points.

3rd Martin Watson (Laser Radial)                                              9 points.
