Bank Holiday Monday and it was the Pursuit Race, where the slower boats start first and the faster boats start later on according to their handicap and try to overtake the slower ones. The race goes on for an hour after the last boat starts and who ever is in the lead at that time wins. There are two races in the competition.

In the morning race there were only eight entries due to the wind coming from the northeast at force 4 gusting to force 5.

There were five Laser Radials, two Laser 4.7’s and a Topper. The lone Topper went off first helmed by Otto Mountrie followed a few minutes later by the Laser 4.7’s Helmed by Melanie Clark and Derek Treacher. Thirteen minutes after the Topper the Laser Radials started, with so many strong gusts it was inevitable that there would be a few capsizes, especially as the wind eddied around Marine Court. Melanie Clark was the first to catch up the Topper; Tom Richardson was next followed by Roy Sandford and Steve Clark. After five laps, Richardson had lapped everybody and Melanie Clark kept on trying to lap the Laser Radials but just failed. Chris Hills gained many places while a few of the others capsized and it looked like he would get third place until Sandford overtook him. Therefore, in first place was Richardson, second was Melanie Clark and in third was Sandford.

For the second race the wind had dropped a bit, it was blowing force 3 with gusts up to force 4. As the Topper had retired, it was not worth starting as in the morning with a Pursuit, so the Lasers all started together. For the first forty metres of the race, all the boats were level bar Sandford who had a 10-metre advantage. Then a gust came and round the first mark, the boats began to sort themselves out with Sandford getting a good lead from Richardson, Clark, Melanie Clark, Mick Lane and Treacher. During the three-lap race Sandford kept the lead until the last reach when Richardson managed to overhaul him to win and Sandford was second. Also on the last reach, Lane and Melanie Clark got ahead of Clark near the end of the race. However, Melanie Clark came third on Handicap.

Positions were after the two races:

1st Tom Richardson     2 Points.

2nd Roy Sandford        5 Points.

3rd Melanie Clark         5 Points.
