RNLI Handicap 2010
There were only four dinghies for the RNLI Handicap on Bank Holiday Monday. The wind was swirling with strong gusts coming from the north east at up to 24mph.
John Parmenter crewed by Richard Parmenter in a Merlin Rocket stormed away from the start line to take the lead in the first race of the RNLI Handicap. Hugh Ashford followed with Mick Lane in 3rd, while Melanie Clark was left capsized on the start line. Ashford had difficulties at the windward mark, where Lane went into 2nd place. Before the end of the first lap Ashford had regained 2nd place after Lane capsized. Clark also recovered and went into 3rd. At the end of the second lap the Parmenter’s were well ahead of Ashford with Lane again in 3rd. But during the third lap the Merlin Rocket mast broke and the Parmenter’s had to retire, so Ashford finished first with Lane in 2nd and Clark in 3rd. Clark was promoted to 2nd on handicap.
Race 2 got underway with just the three Lasers. There were various changes to the order of the race due to capsizes by all competitors. Ashford retired after the first lap and Lane was in the lead on the way to the leeward mark. When passing the mark in a gust of wind Lane had a violent gybe in which his boom came into contact with his navigation system. Clark went ahead and on to win the race. The overall result is as follows:
1st Melanie Clark 3 points.
2nd Mick Lane 5 points.
3rd Hugh Ashford 6 points.
