There was a disappointing turn out for the first competition of the season the Rum Race, which only had three entries. This may have been because it was quite cold on Sunday morning or that the annual half marathon was a week later than normal.
At the start of the two races, the wind was coming from the south at 7mph or less.
Karen Hilder crewed by Mark Pettit on a Dart 16 Catamaran got under way best in race 1, followed by Hugh Ashford in a Laser, Otto Mountrie followed them round in a Topper. Hilder and Pettit drew away on each of the three laps of the race to finish nearly 10 minutes ahead, but was 1st by a short margin on handicap from Ashford.
In race 2 Ashford started the better and kept ahead until the third mark, where Hilder and Pettit started to pull away with Mountrie in 3rd. By the time the finish line came at the end of the second lap Hilder and Pettit were only 3.5 minutes clear, so on handicap Ashford was 1st.
Overall result
1st Hugh Ashford 3 points.
2nd Karen Hilder and Mark Pettit 3 points.
3rd Otto Mountrie 7 points.
