Power Boat Training

Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club – Power Boat Qualification’s Policy

Power Boat instruction at the club will be delivered in three modules.   Club training forms, which include a medical declaration, need to be completed for each module.   Power Boat helms and crews for RYA training courses should hold an RYA Power Boat Level 2 qualification.

Module 1: Power Boat Familiarisation – Competent Crew (Free session.)

The familiarisation session is led by a qualified power boat instructor or an experienced Power Boat helm.  The familiarisation session will provide a club member with a basic understanding of the key functions and operating systems of the boat in order that they can assist the helm of a power boat as a competent crew.  The familiarisation will include how to use the club winch and how to lay a mark.

Module 2: RYA Power Boat Level 1 Club Certificate (Fee chargeable *)

Successful completion of the course will enable a club member to helm a club power boat.

The course is two days in length and is led by one of the club’s qualified Power Boat Instructors who can instruct up to three club members in each course.   To apply for a place on the course, club members need to be competent crews who have completed a minimum of three club duties as a Power Boat crew.

The course content will focus on helming a power boat for the purposes required of the club and take into account the particular sea and shore conditions in its close vicinity.  Club members completing the course will receive:

  • RYA Power Boat Level 1 Certificate;
  • Club Power Boat Helm Competency Certificate;
  • RYA Power Boat Course and Log Book.

Having completed the course, club members can have additional hours recorded in their log book and signed off by a Power Boat Instructor or competent helm to indicate hours experienced in different weather and sea states.

Module 3: RYA Power Boat Level 2 (Fee chargeable *)

This is a national and internationally recognised qualification that will enable the holder to helm power boats within and external to the club.  An RYA Power Boat Level 2 certificate is awarded for Power Boat helms reaching qualification standards.

To achieve this qualification, club members demonstrate through entries in their RYA Power Boat log book that they have gained helming experience in a variety of conditions.  Further Power Boat instruction and assessment relating to practical and theory skills will then be provided by a club Power Boat Instructor to bring club members up to the standards required for award of the Power Boat Level 2 qualification.

(* Fees for modules 2 & 3 are reviewed annually by the Sailing Committee.)

Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club – October 2019

It is an expectation that club members completing this qualification will use their knowledge and skills to support RYA training courses at the club.
